In anticipation for the new year, we often evaluate ourselves and look for things to improve our everyday lives. A lot of people make New Year's resolutions, with some of the most popular goals being to try and eat healthier and going to the gym to get in shape. It's always good to try and better ourselves, and improving our emotional habits is just as important — perhaps more so — than improving ourselves physically.
With the new year fast approaching, it's good to look at our emotional state and strive to be happier and healthier. There are many burdens and stresses in our lives that can lead to unhappiness, but there are ways to deal with these difficult issues. Say "Bye Felicia" to these undesirable qualities that can drag you down so that you have the best year yet.
1. Doubt
Know that you can do anything you put your mind to. If you hear a small voice in your head that says you are incapable of doing something, don't listen.
2. Validation
If you realize that you're trying your best and reaching for the stars, you don't need anyone to confirm what you already know. Sure, it's nice to hear someone recognize that you're working hard or say that you're doing a great job, but not hearing that doesn't take away from your work ethic or potential. You just keep doing you.
3. Regret
Everybody makes mistakes, but you can't dwell on the past and let it drag you down. Just keep moving forward and view your past experiences as learning opportunities instead of failures.
4. Promises You Couldn't Keep
You may have vowed last year to find your dream job, but it didn't happen. You can't put a time limit on achieving your goals. Good things take time.
5. Negativity
Maybe you had some setbacks this year and 2015 wasn't as great as you thought it would be, but that doesn't mean 2016 has to be the same! Leave your baggage and self-doubt in 2015 for a fresh start to the new year.
6. Agony
All those times you cried and endured emotional pain made you a stronger person. Be proud that you made it through the tough times. It will pay off in the end when you reach your goals.
7. Toxic Relationships
Whether it's a former friend or boyfriend, some people just dragged you down and made it clear in 2015 that they don't deserve to be in your life. Focus on the people who care about you and make you a better person.
8. Bad Memories
Don't let those bad memories keep you up at night. You've watched them too many times. Find a better memory in the new year.
9. Technology Obsession
Make an effort to put down your phone and shut off your laptop. Instead, enjoy the outdoors, take up a new hobby, and spend lots of time with family and friends. Technology is a wonderful thing, but sometimes it makes us oblivious to the more important things in life. Moderation is key.
10. Expections
Getting down on yourself for not doing something you said you would is not helpful. Sometimes things don't go the way you initially intended, so focus on the amazing things you've accomplished instead of the things you haven't done yet.
11. The Haters
Some people need to knock others down to build themselves up, but don't give them that satisfaction. Ignore the haters because they aren't worthy of your time. Don't let other people's words make you love yourself less.
12. Nonsense
All those times you were immature and lacked common sense are reminders that you are still a work in progress. Learn from those experiences and move on.
13. People Who Don't Miss You
If they don't miss you back, they're not worth it.
14. Missed Opportunities
Accept the things that you cannot change, change the things that you can, and have the wisdom to know the difference.
15. Flaws
Instead of looking in the mirror and pointing out your imperfections, focus on the qualities that you like about yourself. Make an effort to see yourself for your strengths and not your weaknesses. No one is perfect.
16. The Idea That Things Never Change
Don't dwell on the new year and think that it will be the same as the last. Open yourself up to new opportunities, create new goals, pursue new dreams, and make 2016 the best year yet!
