If you're a New Yorker and are currently on the hunt for electronic Cyber Monday deals, you should probably stay away from purchasing one of the ever popular hoverboards if you plan to use it as your main source of transportation.
It's hard to understand how one of the most diverse, energetic, thriving, and upbeat cities has banned people from riding around on the futuristic hoverboard in public areas.
A tweet (now deleted) was sent out by the 26th NYPD Precinct that reminded New York residents that hoverboards are considered motor vehicles that cannot be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Therefore it is illegal, by Section 19-176.2, to ride one in public spaces.
If someone is caught riding a hoverboard in the streets, on the sidewalk, or even a parking lot, they could face a fine of $500. The only exception is riding them in a park.
Maybe soon we will start to see hoverboard parks all around New York City? This could be another great tourist attraction for the city. So don't lose hope yet, New York hoverboard riders!
A small shop in New York, The Board Store, has already sold 3,000 of the hoverboards at $500 each.
So if you’re thinking of purchasing one in the New York area for a Christmas gift, the only hovering you'll be doing is within the walls of your home.
