Getting to wear you dream all-white ensemble with a matching statement cap. Getting to work with people with different colorful scrubs. The chance to help other people. The opportunity to help save lives. Yes you are proud that you have come this far, you are happy that finally, after long years of studying and struggling, here you are, finally and officially a nurse. But wait, what other perks do you get when you now have an RN attached to your name?
Flexible Schedules
Unlike others who work from 9am-5pm every day, most nurses can choose a schedule that best fits them. Though others may find it difficult trying to arrange a permanent schedule, this flexible scheduling may come in handy when we have important appointments to attend to. You can ask another nurse to trade shifts with you, or even speak with the nursing supervisor, hoping for a temporary change of schedule.
Plus, you can work in different settings may it be rural or urban settings, inpatient, outpatient, in a home setting, in a school, in a law office, in a research setting, and work either full-time or part-time, in day or night shifts.
Job security
Being a nurse, you will always have options for employment. Nowadays, nurses are in high demand. Various healthcare job offers and opportunities are open. By 2018, it is perceived that more than 580,000 nursing positions will be created.
Options, options, options
When you open the door to becoming a nurse, you also open a door that leads to many other doors. In Nursing is not only limited to bedside care, but you can actually choose from dozens of specializations. You can fuse your passions. For example, you can be a nurse and also be a researcher, a nurse and a legal consultant, a travel nurse, a nurse midwife. Name it, there is a long list for you to choose from.
Lifelong learning
You will never get bored when you’re a nurse. There is always something to be learned. Though no matter how sure you are that you already know what’s about to happen next, an unexpected event surprises you. You also get to attend various conferences and seminars. Get to experience new discoveries and innovations in healthcare. A nursing career is full of surprises and challenges, and if you are up for it, it will drive you to become a better, more improved and wiser individual.
You can be a superhero
Minus the flying and all other amazing superpowers, of course. But hey, you can save lives. It’s an extraordinary feeling knowing that you work so that other people can live. It’s an intense feeling knowing that you took part in helping one person recover. And even a better feeling when you see your patient being able to return to their normal lives. You don’t need to have laser eyes, and an incredible strength to help people’s lives, you can do so by utilizing what you have learned from nursing school and from all your years of experience. May it be an emergency CPR, or even by just asking a simple question that can unlock a critical diagnosis.
